Legend of Somdej Phra Puttajarn To Promransri, Thailand

Wat Chetuphon Wilmol Mangkalararm (Wat Pho)

  • This is a first class temple under the patronage of His Majesty the King.
  • This temple was also regarded as the first Public University in Thailand
  • Built in the reign of Pate Racha the King from 1688-1703.
  • The temple was renovated in the reign of King rama 1 of the Chakri Dynasty to be the first University for everyone.
  • King Rama 3rd gave the present name to this temple.
  • Pho Temple is the oldest and the largest temple in Bangkok.
  • This temple features the largest reclining Buddha and the largest collection of Buddha images in Thailand.

Phra Phut Theva Patimakorn

  • There are numerous Buddha images in this temple. There are appoximately 872 images inside the chapel and around the chedi, (the pagoda).
  • Phra Phut Theva patimakorn, the centerpiece, is the biggest image and it is modeled in a unique style.
  • Besides the images, there are more important certerpiece Buddha images in this temple :
  • Phra Pang Trassaruu the centerpiece of the East Vihara, at the front portico.
  • Phra Phutta Lokkanart the centerpiece of the East Vihara, at the rear portico.
  • Phra Prod Panjawakkee the centerpiece of the South Vihara.
  • Phra Nak Prok the centerpiece of the West Vihara, at the front portico.
  • Phra Pa LeLai the centerpiece of the North Vihara.

The Reclining Buddha

  • This image illustrates the passing of the Buddha into Nirvana.
  • The figure was cast in Plaster around a brick core and covered in gold leaf.
  • The feet display 108 different characteristics of the Buddha
  • The reclining Buddha is praised as a distinctive image.
