The Life of Ajatasattu (Ajatashatru)



Nikahakam - (Monk's punishment) / Niyasakam see number 2.
Ni-ka-ha-kam meaning restrain. It is a method of punishing monks according to the Vinaya to make them afraid to repeat the same action. Nikahakam is used for punishing monks who cause harm. Such as causing a quarrel, scandal, immorals, criticize the Triple Gems, act wildly, behave indecently, overthrow the commandments, engaging in criminal activities, etc.
Buddha gave permission to the monks to perform Nikahakam to that person according to Vinaya.
There are 6 methods of Nikahakam specified in Vinaya.
1. Tachanikam : Suppress by condemnation.
2. Niyasakam : Removes of one's rank and authority. Removes of duties.
3. Phapachanikam : Exile from monk's hood. Expelled from the group.
4. Patasaraniyakam : Forced to ask for forgiveness and apologize when offended a layman.
5. Ukepaniyakam : Rid off the right to obtain or receive something.
6. Tassapapiyasigakam : Most severe punishment from 1 to 5. For monk who gave false testimony, false words.
